WIP Challenge Check-in, Day 28 -- Tuesday
Oct. 28th, 2025 09:17 amHello on Tuesday! What kind of a writing day has it been so far today -- or if today hasn't gotten going yet, how did you fare yesterday?
- I thought about my fic once or twice
- I wrote
- I did some planning and/or outlining
- I did research and/or canon review
- I edited
- I've sent my fic off to my beta
- I posted today!
- I'm taking a break
- I did something else that I'll talk about in a comment
Tuesday Discussion: How do you compose your words for your writing -- handwritten on paper? Typed up in a document on your computer? On your phone?

Nothing You Can Ever Say, by H_River_Ageleis (M)
Oct. 27th, 2025 06:40 pmShow: SG-1
Rec Category: Jack O'Neill
Characters:Pairings: Jack/Daniel
Categories: mission related, major whump. hurt/no comfort
Warnings: major whump. hurt/no comfort, no gore
Word Count: 5211
Author on DW: none found
Author's Website: AO3 Profile
Link: Nothing You can Ever Say
Author's Summary:
Daniel's lips get sewn shut while on a mission. No one knows how it happened, and Daniel can't tell them. He and Jack have been in a secret relationship for months. Jack becomes unpredictable in his fear of losing Daniel.
Why This Must Be Read:
This is for Whumptober 2025 and H_River_Ageleis has delivered.
The fic is heartbreaking as Daniel and Jack both suffer from whatever has sewn Daniel's mouth shut. It's appropriately whump-y for the prompts... For all that it's not gory, it's still frightening in its own way.
Not for the happy ending folk but an interesting exploration of what could be out there!

November sign up
Oct. 27th, 2025 10:56 amIt's time to sign up for the November WIP challenge! Some people join the challenge mid month, or comment on check-in posts without signing up, which is fine -- I'm glad there's a way for the challenge to be useful in a variety of ways. For those of you who find the commitment of signing up useful, please leave a comment with the below information.
Sign-ups will be open until the end of November.
Copypaste below:
The post for hosting the daily check-in is here and thanks to everyone who helps out with this. If you're interested in helping out and there are still slots available the post remains open until the last week of the month and we generally run our week Sunday to Saturday, I'm happy to chat via PM on DW for anyone who might need it.
If you have ever completed a fic through this challenge we have a collection on AO3 and on SquidgeWorld both collections are open and unmoderated. Should there be an issue with adding a work, let me know and I'll see if there's a fix for it.

Level of challenge: 1 chapter, 1000 words, 1 fic finished, whatever you like
Fandom(s) involved: if you know at this point
What you're looking for from the challenge: this could be as vague or specific as you like: someone to be accountable to, someone to remind you to write, someone to bounce ideas off, etc.
What you could offer other participants yourself: ditto!
How people should contact you: DW message, e-mail, IM etc.
Time zone: useful for seeing who might be up for a writing session at a time convenient to you

Tin Men, by MSSalieri (G)
Oct. 26th, 2025 12:27 pmShow: SG-1
Rec Category: Jack O'Neill
Characters:Pairings: implied Daniel/Sam
Categories: post-episode
Warnings: some morbid thoughts that are not carried out
Word Count: 1680
Author on DW:
troyswann
Author's Website: AO3 Profile
Link: Tin Men
Author's Summary:
As he slaps glue onto a weeping pipe and bends a patch around it, Jack fantasizes about a Goa’uld incursion. A firefight. A daring rescue. Actually, he doesn’t picture the actual adventure, but rather the four of them on their slabs talking about it, a hundred years from now. “Remember that time?” Of course they’ll remember it. They’ll remember it perfectly. In his imagination, they fall silent and sit on their slabs waiting for the seconds to roll over uselessly like tumblers in a broken lock.
Eternity, infinity, entropy and art therapy.
Why This Must Be Read:
One of the myriad of ways the lives of our beloved characters may have gone after they realized they were robots and not human.
There's a bit of morbid thinking but MSSalieri is more hopeful than that and gives a hopeful ending in the short space of her story.

Unscheduled Excursion (by slybrarian) (Teen)
Oct. 26th, 2025 11:51 pmShows: SGA (fusion with Battlestar Gallactica)
Rec Category: Action/Adventure
Characters: John Sheppard, Chuck Campbell, Evan Lorne, Elizabeth Weir, Rodney McKay
Categories: Gen
Words: 1289
Warnings: no AO3-type warnings apply
Author on DW:
slybrarian
Author's Website: slybrarian on AO3, slybrarian on sga_flashfic
Link: Unscheduled Excursion on AO3
Why This Must Be Read: This is a great little fusion of familiar SGA characters with the universe of Battlestar Gallactica (you don't need to know that to enjoy it). It's John Sheppard-centric, as Sheppard (the battlestar ship's commander) tries to decide what to do next in the midst of disaster. It was written for a flashfic challenge and is a standalone piece, an intriguing glimpse into an interesting AU.

Database maintenance
Oct. 25th, 2025 08:42 amGood morning, afternoon, and evening!
We're doing some database and other light server maintenance this weekend (upgrading the version of MySQL we use in particular, but also probably doing some CDN work.)
I expect all of this to be pretty invisible except for some small "couple of minute" blips as we switch between machines, but there's a chance you will notice something untoward. I'll keep an eye on comments as per usual.
Ta for now!
